Yet another overcast, flat light, depressing day. But unlike the others, today was broken up with enough disruptions that it was fairly enjoyable.
Just one hour into the drive today we stopped at South+100 to do a little maintenance at the waypoint. There has been a drum of Mogas strapped to the marker for years and was mostly buried. So we unburied the drum and moved it away from the marker and flagged it. We also took the time to pull the marker up out of the snow adding a good four feet back on to its height.
Shenanigans at the 1000 load check kept the mood light...
Lunch was a feast of smoked eggs. I didn't mention what affects they may have regarding flatulence. I'm excited to hear about the results.
This afternoon at 179 miles south of McMurdo the word "Skua" sounded over the radio and we had our first wildlife sighting of the entire trip. This was entertainment for miles as the skua flew along with the convoy. An hour later, long after I believed the skua to have parted ways, I was dive bombed by said skua. No warning. One second a windshield full of nothing but snow and clouds then BAM four feet of wingspan ten feet in front of me. Well that kept me alert for the rest of the day.
Dinner was a Thanksgiving feast served by Kriete. Turkey and cranberries with stuffing and roasted pumpkin. There was spinach balls for something green. However there was no dessert so I had a leftover brownie.
